Fish for Life is not just about wild capture fisheries. We also support responsibly managed fish farming because we believe it’s fundamentally important to the future security of fish supply – and a key industry for many developing countries.

To apply our Ten Principles to farmed fish, we have strict codes of practice for our aquaculture suppliers, tailored to different species. They have to meet these criteria to supply to our business, demonstrating that they are operating in an ethical and environmentally sustainable way.

There isn’t yet a global sustainability certification scheme for farmed fish equivalent to the MSC for wild caught – but there is one in the pipeline. It’s called the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and we’re working closely with industry bodies and the WWF in supporting the development of these standards, which are hoped to be in full operation by mid 2011.
